2 Powerful Suggestions to Help Guide One Through Self-Doubt
Dana Rockwell
We've all had bad days where nothing seems to be working in our favor. The more we dwell on the negative aspects of our day the gloomier our mood becomes. Usually, we are able to go to sleep and wake up the next morning with a fresh start. What happens when one attempts to remain positive and the melancholy and somber mood doesn't disappear? Not being able to shake this mood may lead to self-doubt, fear, and anxiety. Self-doubt interrupts our confidence and could plague our abilities. Self-doubt equals self-defeat! And, it's not a coincidence that the word SELF is neighbored with doubt and defeat. The good news is SELF-has the capability of placing itself back into a positive state of mind slowly dissipating self-doubt.
The following ideas are suggestions to help guide one through self-doubt:
1) Practice Acceptance.
Accept yourself. It's completely okay to be in a vulnerable state. No one is perfect, what the hell is perfect, anyway? Not fully functioning? It's okay, acknowledge what's bothering you and move forward, don't dwell or become stuck. Always remember: "This too shall pass". We are human and LIFE happens. Accept it and give yourself a break, take it slow, but still follow through with responsibilities. Struggling with something from the past? People often say the past is the past and while I agree one should leave it there, I feel they should also accept the past and learn from it to prepare for a better future. If one becomes stuck and focused on the past SELF-doubt will quickly lead to SELF-defeat. Accept how you are feeling but also realize nothing is permanent unless SELF-believes it is. SELF-has the power to change anything!
2) Incorporate Positive Affirmations into your daily routine.
Positive affirmations can be very powerful messages. Affirmations are meant to uplift one's mood and set a positive tone and environment. A good practice would be to incorporate positive affirmations into your daily routine. I prefer to read them in the morning and reflect on them throughout the day, eventually determining what the affirmation means on a personal level. Need a pick me up during the day? Involve staff with a positive affirmation exercise. Ask them to print or write some of their favorite affirmations in a small to a medium font, similar to a fortune cookie message, fold them up and place them into a jar or basket. Throughout the day all are welcome to pull the affirmations out of the jar and smile. Practicing this routinely will lead SELF to feel empowered and HELP SELF-say good-bye to SELF-doubt and SELF-defeat.
Remember, not all moments are good ones. The key is not to allow SELF to turn bad moments into bad days and continue on to worse weeks or months. SELF has the power to turn it around, especially when one is mindful and open to trying the above suggestions. I believe in you and you should always believe in yourself!
